    America250: Moore’s Creek Bridge β€” February 27, 1776

    February 27, 1776 β€” near Currie. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

The most famous battle you’ve never heard of β€” fought 20 miles from our beaches.

1,600 Loyalists, many Scottish Highlanders with broadswords, marched on Wilmington to crush the rebellion. At dawn, they charged across a narrow bridge at Moore’s Creek.

The Patriots had removed the planks and greased the rails. A thousand militiamen waited in the mist with muskets and cannons.

The charge collapsed in minutes. 850 Loyalists captured. British plans for the South wrecked.

Weeks later, North Carolina became the FIRST colony to vote for independence β€” the Halifax Resolves.

    It started at that bridge.

    America250: Brunswick Town Burned β€” Spring 1776

    Spring 1776 β€” Brunswick Town. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Once the grandest port on the Cape Fear, home to two royal governors. The British burned it to the ground.

First came a raiding party from HMS Cruizer under Captain Collett. Then came 900 British regulars under Colonel Cornwallis, acting on orders from Generals Clinton and Cornwallis. They torched homes, warehouses, and Russellborough β€” the governor’s mansion.

Only a handful of families ever returned. By 1830, the town was gone β€” sold for $4.25.

Today you can walk the ruins and still see the scars.

The price of freedom, written in ashes on our riverbank.
