America250: Brunswick Town Burned — Spring 1776

Spring 1776 — Brunswick Town. 🇺🇸

Once the grandest port on the Cape Fear, home to two royal governors. The British burned it to the ground.

First came a raiding party from HMS Cruizer under Captain Collett. Then came 900 British regulars under Colonel Cornwallis, acting on orders from Generals Clinton and Cornwallis. They torched homes, warehouses, and Russellborough — the governor’s mansion.

Only a handful of families ever returned. By 1830, the town was gone — sold for $4.25.

Today you can walk the ruins and still see the scars.

The price of freedom, written in ashes on our riverbank.
