    America250: Fort Johnston Snipers β€” May 1776

    May 1776 β€” Southport. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

The British came back for Fort Johnston. Big mistake.

Patriot riflemen hiding in the fort’s ruins sniped the British fleet for DAYS. Their shots struck the armed transport Sovereign β€” and flew clean through to the Glasgow Packet behind her, killing two British sailors and wounding two more.

General Clinton was furious. He landed ten companies of redcoats to hunt the snipers down. They found nothing but horse tracks.

So Clinton did the only thing he could: he ordered Fort Johnston demolished.

Southport’s first fort died twice β€” and the Patriots made the British pay both times.

America250: Attack on Fort Johnston β€” July 1775

    July 18–21, 1775 β€” Southport. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Before the Declaration was even signed, North Carolina’s Revolution started HERE.

Patriots led by Robert Howe, Cornelius Harnett, and John Ashe stormed Fort Johnston at the mouth of the Cape Fear while Royal Governor Josiah Martin watched from a British warship offshore.

The fort was largely destroyed. The governor fled to the ship. The Crown’s grip on our coast broke that week β€” and never came back.

Historians call it the first active violence against the British in North Carolina.

It happened on our shoreline, 251 years ago this summer.
