🏛️ Missed Monday’s Brunswick County commissioners meetings? Here’s what came out of them — including a rezoning decision right by Sunset Beach.
The board met twice Monday, Oct. 19: a 2 p.m. special meeting on future utilities expansion planning (no vote taken), then the 6 p.m. regular meeting. Here’s the rundown:
📍 SUNSET BEACH AREA REZONING APPROVED — The board unanimously approved rezoning case Z-945, a parcel west of 6739 Ocean Highway West (U.S. 17) near Sunset Beach, from a mix of commercial-low density and medium-density residential to commercial-low density. The applicant was the only person who asked to speak at the hearing.
🚓 TWO MORE SHERIFF’S TRAFFIC POSITIONS — Commissioners unanimously accepted a N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program grant funding two additional Sheriff’s Office traffic-unit positions, plus their vehicles and equipment. It’s the grant’s first year, with a 15% county match.
💧 WATER RATES AND PLANS — New hydrant bulk-water fees were unanimously approved, effective Jan. 1, 2027. But action on the proposed Hydrant Bulk Water Policy itself, and on updates to the Water Shortage Response Plan and Water Emergency Ordinance, was tabled to the next meeting so commissioners have more time to review.
🏠 REAPPRAISAL — The board held a public hearing on the uniform schedules of values for the 2027 countywide reappraisal (one speaker). No vote was taken; the board will consider adopting the schedule at its next meeting.
📹 LICENSE-PLATE READERS — The county manager updated the board on Sheriff’s Office license-plate reader (ALPR) cameras and policy changes, and the board unanimously approved fulfilling a purchase order for dashboard cameras that were already bought under the Sheriff’s Axon contract before the board paused further ALPR procurement on Sept. 21.
🗓️ Next up: the board’s next regular meeting is Monday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. in Bolivia.
