Heads up, night owls — the Orionids peak tonight

This is debris from Halley’s Comet, and Oct. 20–22 is the best of it — tonight through Thursday morning. The catch: a bright waxing moon washes out the evening sky, so the real show comes after the moon sets in the early-morning hours, when Orion is riding high and the sky goes dark.

Best seats in the house: The Point at the north tip of Cherry Grove — or any dark, ocean-facing stretch away from bright lights. Give your eyes about 20 minutes to adjust, and leave the phone flashlight off — turtle nesting season runs through Oct. 31, so a dim red light is the move on the sand.
