Bladen’s militia colonel from 1775, he fought at Moore’s Creek Bridge, then devised the deception that won Elizabethtown β€” feigning retreat to the Neuse, doubling back at night, and leading one of three 23-man columns into the Tory camp before dawn. The Tories burned his home in revenge. Robeson County, carved from Bladen in 1787, bears his name. He was 45 when he died, four years after the war.
