BRUNSWICK COUNTY’S GOLF PROS: Meet Cameryn Smith, Sea Trail

THE SHORT VERSION: Cameryn Smith is the first assistant golf professional at Sea Trail Golf Resort in Sunset Beach — and she’s a Brunswick County native, through and through. The 28-year-old Ocean Isle Beach native grew up on these fairways, and now she spends her days helping other golfers — especially women — find confidence on the course.

HOW SHE GOT HERE: Smith picked up a club at age 7 through the First Tee Program, played high school golf, and earned a scholarship to Queens University of Charlotte, where she played until 2019. After graduation she taught junior golfers through First Tee, then came home in 2024 and joined Sea Trail that April, drawn by the resort’s growth. “I’m from the area, I’ve seen this property my whole life,” she says. “I wanted to be a part of that.”

WHAT MAKES HER DIFFERENT: Her teaching style is, in her words, “one hundred percent vibes based” — plain language, fun, and no tearing a swing apart. A good follow-through becomes a “belly button toe tap”; a good chip is “giving the grass a haircut.” And she doesn’t tolerate women golfers being made to feel small on the course: “If I see it, I snap. I’ll say something.”

Her philosophy, in one line: “You hit good shots, you hit bad shots, but you still have to get the ball in the hole. Same thing with life.”

Smith teaches men’s and women’s clinics and private lessons at Sea Trail Golf Resort, 75 Clubhouse Road, Sunset Beach.
