Rebecca Brewton Motte β born 1737 in Charleston, SC (some say 1738); died 1815 on her Santee plantation. πΊπΈ
For five years she fed and supplied Marion’s Continentals. When the British fortified her own mansion as “Fort Motte,” she moved her family to the overseer’s house β then consented to the unthinkable: burn it down. She handed over East Indian fire-arrows from her late brother’s estate, and Marion’s men set her roof ablaze. The British surrendered. She watched her home burn to win a battle. That’s what the cause cost β and what she paid willingly.
