Penelope Barker

Penelope Barker β€” born June 17, 1728 in Edenton, NC; died 1796 in Edenton. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

On October 25, 1774, she organized 51 women to sign a resolve boycotting British tea and manufactures β€” the first organized women’s political demonstration in America. The Edenton Tea Party shocked London; the British press mocked them, but the boycott held. Her husband was stranded in England for 17 years, so Penelope managed their plantations and raised the family alone β€” straight through the Revolution. She led from her parlor, and a nation followed.
