Francis Marion β born c. 1732 in St. John’s Parish, SC; died Feb 27, 1795 at Pond Bluff, SC. πΊπΈ
The Swamp Fox. A broken ankle kept him out of Charleston’s fall β so he raised a guerrilla band and bled the British along the Pee Dee and Santee: Black Mingo, Tearcoat Swamp, Fort Motte, Eutaw Springs. Tarleton chased him 26 miles through the swamps and quit: “the Devil himself could not catch him.” Marion slept in swamps while the British burned farms. Congress thanked him. He never chased fame β he just owned the swamps.
