💧 Heads up — a big sewer decision hits the table Monday, and it could land on your water bill.
The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners holds a special-called workshop Monday at 2 PM in Bolivia to decide how much new wastewater capacity to build. The options: 6, 9, or 12 million gallons per day — at $348 million, $495 million, or $588 million.
Why it matters to your wallet: by state law, 75% of the cost falls on new development — and 25% on existing customers like you.
The backstory: a state law change (Session Law 2023-55) now counts approved-but-not-yet-connected sewer permits against capacity. That pushed the county’s West system to 183% of capacity — the county’s own share is 607% of its allotment. Without an expansion, the county’s utilities director says a sewer and building moratorium could follow.
Same night at 6 PM, the board’s regular meeting includes public hearings on the proposed Hydrant Bulk Water Program and the 2027 reappraisal schedules.
