Richard Caswell β born Aug 3, 1729 in Joppa, Maryland; died Nov 10, 1789 in Fayetteville, NC. πΊπΈ
Hero of Moore’s Creek Bridge. He seized the royal treasury, drove the governor to his warship, wrote the state constitution, and became North Carolina’s first independent governor. After leaving office in broken health, he took the field again at Camden in 1780 as major general of militia β and shared the shame of that rout. He stayed, rebuilt the militia, and served to war’s end. He died presiding over the state senate, still at his post.
