Lightning-Prediction Startup Flash Weather AI Wins Myrtle Beach Golf Tech Challenge

⚑🏌️ A lightning startup just won Myrtle Beach’s golf tech showdown.

Eight companies from the U.S. and Europe pitched ideas for improving golf at the three-day eMYRge Golf Tech Accelerator Challenge β€” and the winner, Flash Weather AI, focused on the one thing that can empty every course in seconds: the weather.

Their patented ‘First Strike’ tech doesn’t just detect lightning after the fact β€” it predicts it, updating every two minutes with a focus down to a single square kilometer. In the demo, chief meteorologist Dave Downey showed the system flagging a strike at an Alabama venue 22 minutes ahead β€” on radar the showers looked unremarkable, and lightning hit about 23 minutes later.

Why it matters on the Grand Strand: when golfers are spread across hundreds of acres, minutes of warning decide whether players, maintenance crews, and resort guests get to shelter in time. The system pushes alerts through apps, text messages, and push notifications, and a clubhouse display called FlashView puts live threat levels on TVs so staff and golfers see the same information. There’s even an ‘All Clear’ product to help operators reopen safely β€” and fewer false-alarm closures. Their agronomy tools also forecast frost, rain, and turf disease risk, which helps superintendents plan irrigation and spraying. They’re already serving nearly 200 courses and cite work with the Big 12 and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The bigger play: the program β€” backed by Play Golf Myrtle Beach, Coastal Carolina University, and Golfweek β€” wants golf tech companies to headquarter here, not just visit. A weather win in golf country is a good start. β›ˆοΈ
