America250: Battles of Our Coast β€” Waccamaw River, February 15, 1781

Our final story crosses the state line.

Loyalist Lt. John Wilson rode to the Waccamaw River and seized Patriot Capt. John Clarke β€” at Clarke’s own home.

No armies. No cannons. Just the brutal, personal war that raged along the Waccamaw: neighbors hunting neighbors, raids and counter-raids, while Francis Marion’s partisans fought the British across the Lowcountry.

This is the war our grandparents’ grandparents lived through β€” not on distant battlefields, but in their own yards and river landings.

Eight stories. One coast. 250 years of freedom.
