America250: Battle of Elizabethtown — August 27, 1781

August 27, 1781 — Elizabethtown. 🇺🇸

Dawn. Col. Thomas Owen’s Patriot militia crept up on the Tory camp at Tory Hole and attacked.

The Tories — neighbors, planters, men from Bladen County itself — were routed in a running fight. The Revolution in the Carolinas was a civil war, fought between people who’d known each other for years.

Two months later, Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown.

The battle is still remembered every August at Tory Hole Park — the 245th anniversary was just celebrated.

Drive 45 minutes inland from our beaches, and you’re standing where it happened.
